After discovering this hidden treasure, we always seem to find ourselves back at the MacCallum House Inn. It seems to be our little hide-away from the city. On our first trip to Mendocino together (back in February) we met some of greatest locals. The staff at the inn are always pleasant. This whole town and the people of Mendocino has taken my breath away!
We've had the opportunity to stay at a couple of different rooms and I'd have to say everyone should reserve a night at the water tower. It's breath-takingly beautiful!
Overall, each room has a story to tell or a memory to be added to their own story book.
I fall in love with this place everytime we step foot in it.

We had a wonderful time in Mendocino, the property is so beautiful and the breakfast was exceptional. One person who stands out among the rest is the young girl with long brown hair who was our waitress during the breakfast hours. She was so pleasant and had such a wonderful personality unfortunately we didn't get her name, but I'm sure she often stands out from the others. My friends brought me up to Mendocino for a few days and we arrived late in the afternoon with no reservation. The MacCallum House found a perfect set of rooms for the three of us up under the eaves. What a great, mellow, cozy start to the New Year! While the MacCallum House's appointments are stellar, it's the staff and owners that give the inn its warm, home-from-home atmosphere. Thanks all round to Joseph, Stephanie, Jed, Megan — and all the others we didn't meet whose unseen hands built the crackling fires, whipped the hollandaise, changed the sheets, and trimmed the immaculate grounds. We enjoyed our 3-day stay so much we're planning to make it a New Year's tradition!!
The Gazebo Playhouse
The web site's virtual tour sold us on the Gazebo Playhouse, and the reality was even better. While this unit probably isn't for everyone as the bathroom is not en suite (it's a few steps away across covered decking), this minor inconvenience was more than eclipsed by the unit's stand-alone privacy and cozy charm. Joseph, the major domo who welcomed us on Sunday, was concerned that we might not have anticipated the external bath and offered us an upgrade to one of the en suite units at no extra charge, which we declined with thanks. But the offer is typical of the inn's punctiliousness and concern with it's guests' comfort. We love coming back after a day of tramping the village and the coastline to our little redwood-lined snuggery. It was like a luxurious camp-out next door to a four-star restaurant.
NB: This unit's special atmosphere may be due in part to the fact that it was a real playhouse. Daisy MacCallum had it built for her children, and later opened it to all the children of the village. Many of the natives will tell you they remember playing in the little house in their childhood.
Food at the MacCallum house
One of our few disappointments on this trip was our failure to anticipate off-season closures of prime dining destinations on the coast (we stayed with the inn from Jan 11-13). We'd planned on dining at least one night at the inn, and at places like Cafe Beaujolais and the Ledward House, but they were either closed entirely (Beaujolais) or closed for dinner (the inn) for several weeks in this slow season. The sumptuous and flawlessly executed breakfasts the Inn gave us in the mornings almost made us bitter about not being able to dine with them as well ;-) I had the eggs benedict two mornings running, and the swedish pancakes on the third. All the meals were consistently excellent, and the service was warmly attentive and exact. Cafe Moose proved to be a fine alternative, and we enjoyed the Mendocino Cafe's comfort food lunches and the view from its deck—complete with the cafe's cat in your lap, and their deck dog at you feet if you're so inclined.

I just wanted to thank Jed Ayres and all the staff at MacCallum House for a delightful stay on Wednesday night. We were in Room 18 of the Barn -- very rustic and elegant at the same time and such a magnificent view. During the wine and hors d'oeuvres hour Wednesday evening we met a wonderful couple visiting from England, so shared our love and knowledge of the Mendocino Coast with them. We also enjoyed the delicious breakfast Thursday morning, so ably served by your wait staff.
